WHISTLER, BC April 22, 2014 – Whistler Blackcomb continues to be recognized for its proactive approach to climate change. The National Canadian Roundtable on the Economy and Environment has recently recognized Whistler Blackcomb for its leadership on climate change awareness. The recognition continues as Whistler Blackcomb is proud to be named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the sixth year in a row by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers.
The award lauds Whistler Blackcomb’s continued commitment to reducing its operating footprint to zero. Whistler Blackcomb is honoured by the recent recognition but remains firmly committed to its longer term vision of having a zero operating footprint and becoming a model to global tourism on footprint reduction.
“Reducing our operating carbon foot print is deeply embedded into our culture. When surveyed, 72 per cent of our employees said commitment to sustainability was a factor in their decision to work here. We are grateful to our employees for bringing their innovative ideas, passion and talent to help us implement real solutions and we are continually inspired by their commitment every day,” says Arthur De Jong, Mountain Planning and Environmental Resource Manager. “Achieving a sustainable operational model is not enough on its own to make a difference on a global scale. But if we become a model to global tourism on footprint reduction we can inspire other tourism operators throughout the world to reduce their operating footprints. Our aspirations are at a global level. Only through collective action and reduction of carbon at a global scale can we stop the threat of climate change.”
Whistler Blackcomb’s new achievements that contributed to being named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers in 2014 include building a strong strategy on climate change and working with BC Hydro on being a Power Smart Leader in British Columbia. Data obtained from 2013 shows recent progress in footprint reduction from 2012, including a 30 per cent reduction in waste and a 7.7 per cent reduction in hydro electrical use. While Whistler Blackcomb continues to groom more acreage, it successfully held the line on hydrocarbons, with a 1 per cent reduction from 2012. This is due to a highly successful anti-idling campaign. Almost 76 per cent of Whistler Blackcomb’s fuel consumption is from the grooming fleet. With new engine technology becoming available, Whistler Blackcomb projects a significant drop in fuel consumption by over 40 per cent within the next five years.
