WHISTLER, BC - February 26, 2013 – Canada’s longest running snowboard competition, the Showcase Showdown presented by Burton, returns to Whistler Blackcomb for the 16th consecutive year March 2, 2013.The Showdown will feature a “Night of the Living Shred” big air contest where snowboarders will compete for a total of $5000 cash, plus prizes from Spy, Sandbox, DAKINE, and Skullcandy.
“The Showcase Showdown is always an extremely fun contest, and this year should be no different with a zombie themed event,” said last year’s champion Jesse Millen. “The Showdown is so great because it features some of the top local riders throwing down their best tricks in front of all of their friends.”
The Showcase Showdown presented by Burton will once again take place at the base of Whistler Mountain, offering prime event viewing from the GLC patio and Skiers Plaza. Qualifying will begin at 2 p.m., with riders having a two hour jam session on the 55-foot kicker to secure a spot in the finals. Finals will take place between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. and will feature a head to head knockout format to crown the overall champion.
The top men’s finisher will receive $2,500, while the runner up with take home $1,000. The top female will earn $1,000 and second place female finisher will pocket $500.
The competitor chosen as the best dressed Zombie will also walk away with a prize pack and cash for their costume. After the contest, Merlin’s Bar & Grill at the base of Blackcomb will hold the after party starting at 9 p.m. with even more prizes and giveaways. Tickets are not required for entry to the after party.
Mandatory athlete pre-registration can be done at Showcase Snowboards store locations, Whistler Blackcomb Guest Relations, online, or by calling 1-800-766-0449. Spots are limited and helmets are required. Entry fee is $60 plus HST. Athlete check-in and day-of registration will take place from 12 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. on the GLC patio.
This year’s event sponsors include Burton, Ride, ThirtyTwo, Bonfire, Spy, Skullcandy, and Vans. Showcase Showdown partners include Kokanee, Merlin’s Bar & Grill, Garibaldi Lift Company and Whistler Blackcomb Parks.
Snowboard fans can look forward to Whistler Blackcomb’s next major snowboard event during The Shred Show, Presented by Monster Energy at the World Ski and Snowboard Festival in April. The World Ski and Snowboard Festival takes place in Whistler from April 12 to 21, 2013 and for the second year in a row The Shred Show, Presented by Monster Energy will feature World Snowboard Tour 5-Star events in slopestyle and big air.
