WHISTLER, BC July 28, 2014 – When the mercury rises in British Columbia during the summer months, the Whistler Blackcomb alpine offers the perfect escape to beat the heat. The cool, crisp mountain air provides a refreshing environment, ideal for exploring one of the many trails and activities available at Whistler’s higher elevations.
“On average, the alpine temperatures at Whistler Blackcomb are five to ten degrees cooler than the temperatures in the valley, so we encourage our guests to get up high to stay cool during the hot summer months,” says Rob McSkimming, Vice President of Business Development at Whistler Blackcomb. “Our summer alpine program gets bigger and better every year. This summer we are excited about the addition of some new experiences to complement staple activities, like our alpine trails and the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola.”
New this summer, Whistler Blackcomb has introduced a new Geology and Ecology Tour in the alpine called The Journey of Ancient Peaks. Lead by expert guides, these tours take guests back millions of years to the formation of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains’ breathtaking alpine environments. The guides explain the key geographical milestones of the area while highlighting the flora, fauna and the effects of climate change along the way. The Geology & Ecology Tours require light to moderate physical effort and include a trip across the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola so both the Whistler and Blackcomb alpines can be explored. Morning and afternoon tours are available daily through to September 1.
Alpine hiking continues to be the ideal way to explore the mountains in the summertime and with over 50 kilometres of hiking and running trails at over 6,000 feet, Whistler Blackcomb offers some of the most easily accessible, and vast, hiking and running alpine terrain in North America. The trails vary in difficulty from light to advanced, offering something for everyone, at every fitness level. Thanks to warm early summer temperatures and a lot of sunny weather, all of the alpine trails are now open to the public almost three weeks ahead of schedule, including Whistler Blackcomb’s signature trails: Decker Loop on Blackcomb Mountain and High Note Trail on Whistler Mountain.
Decker Loop is an advanced trail that can take up to 2.5 hours to complete but is well worth the effort as it takes hikers into the Garibaldi Provincial Park and provides spectacular views of Overlord Glacier. Similarly, High Note Trail on Whistler can take up to 4 hours to complete and rewards hikers with views of volcanic Black Tusk and Cheakamus Lake. Alpine wildflowers are blooming and will be in their prime in late July and August. Recommended hikes for wildflower viewing include Lakeside Loop and Overlord Trail.
Additional activities available in the Whistler Blackcomb alpine during the summer months include sightseeing on the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, Mountain Top BBQ dinners at the Roundhouse Lodge, Twilight Photography Tours, and the ultimate way to get high in the sky, new Whistler Heli Sightseeing Tours operated by Blackcomb Aviation.
