WHISTLER, BC March 19, 2014 – Top ranked snowboarders on the World Snowboard Tour arrived at Whistler Blackcomb last weekend for the 17th Annual Showcase Showdown. Backed by Monster Energy for the first time, the Showdown held higher stakes for riders including a $40,000 prize purse, and the chance to qualify for the Monster Energy Shred Show during the World Ski and Snowboard Festival in April in Whistler. It was announced before the event that the top three men from the pro division slopestyle and big air would earn invitations to compete in the Shred Show, a five-star competition on the World Snowboard Tour. The Shred Show will be held during the World Ski and Snowboard Festival during April 11- 15, 2014 and will consist of three events, boarderstyle, slopestyle, and big air.
The Showcase Showdown kicked off on Friday with the ShowUp Slopestyle in Blackcomb’s Nintendo Terrain Park. After two rounds of competition, Olympian and X Games gold medalist Maxence Parrot (CAN) nabbed first place for the men along with an $8,000 cheque. Whistler’s Darcy Sharpe (CAN) took second place and $4,000, and in third was Ryan Stassel (USA) taking home $2,000. In the women’s category, Jess Rich (AUS) took the top spot along with a $2,500 cheque, Breanna Strangeland (CAN) came second receiving $1,500, and Olympian Jenna Blasman (CAN) walked away with third place and $500. Because Parrot, Sharpe, and Stassle had all pre-qualified for the Shred Show, the invitations were extended to the men in the fourth, fifth and sixth positions; Brin Alexander (CAN), Michael Ciccarelli (CAN), and David Kinskofer (CAN).
Day two brought the big air competition under heavy snowfall at the base of Whistler Mountain. Katherine Lacroix-Vogel (CAN) battled through the challenging conditions to take first place and a $2,500 cheque in the pro women's category. In second place was Jenna Blasman (CAN) landing her second podium of the weekend along with $1,500, and rounding out the top three was Molly Milligan (CAN) taking home $500. On the men’s side, Darcy Sharpe (CAN) returned to the podium taking the win in the pro men's division along with an $8,000 cheque. In second place was Ryan Manning (CAN) receiving $4,000, and in third was Matts Kulisek (CAN) earning $2,000. Sharpe and Kulisek were also pre-qualified for the Shred Show big air competition so the invitations were extended to Ryan Manning (CAN), Anthony Stefnizzi (CAN) and Brin Alexander (CAN).
