Flora and Fauna

From June to October, as the snow melts and then starts to reappear, Whistler Blackcomb undergoes a broad transformation via three unique summer seasons featuring various flora & fauna.

Early Summer Season Dates: May - July

Despite the warm summer days in the Whistler Valley, Whistler Blackcomb's alpine provides almost year-round opportunities for an impromptu snowball fight or snowman construction that'll bring out the kid in everyone.

Starting June:

The Mountain Top BBQ Series at the Roundhouse Lodge

Summer Skiing/Riding on the Horstman Glacier.

Mid Summer Season Dates: Late July - Early September

At the height of summer, the open-air chairlifts raise you up high over the tree line into an expanse of giant, snow-capped peaks, glaciers and ancient volcanic debris. Warmer temperatures allow more access to alpine hiking trails and walking paths.  And for three to four weeks the mountains explode into a pallet of colour during wildflower season.

Fall Season Dates: Early September - Early October

The alpine environment in autumn still allows for epic hikes or runs, incredible views, stunning colours and maybe even a light dusting of snow on the mountain peaks.  And this is your best chance to see wildlife, because it’s not just humans that play in these wild mountains: Black bear families, deer, grouse, marmots and pika all roam the dense forests.

Bears

Bears

40-60 black bears, from approximately 8 resident families, call these Mountains home. Their diet consists primarily of berries that are plentiful in the ski runs and forested areas on Whistler Blackcomb. Spot them from the chairlifts and gondolas or take a guided bear tour from the comfort and safety of a 4X4 vehicle. Guided Bear Tour - More Info  »

Marmots

Marmots

One of Whistler Blackcomb’s most famous residents is the Whistling Marmot. Found in high alpine areas, this giant squirrel-like character feeds on grass, berries, lichens, mosses, fl owers and roots. While it hibernates in winter, its shrill summer-time whistle was the inspiration for the Mountain’s name.

Black Tailed Deer

Black Tailed Deer

These majestic 100-200lb (45-90kg) animals take shelter in the old growth forests throughout summer and winter, but can be spotted at the treeline and in open spaces that offer grassy areas for grazing. The larger males have small fork-like antlers.

Wildflowers
