Whistler Blackcomb is a world leader in environmental stewardship and recreational design. Led by the Mountain Planning and Environmental manager this tour takes you deep into the most scenic and ecology rich zones of Whistler Blackcomb, otherwise not accessible to public. You will learn firsthand how Whistler Blackcomb successfully co-exists with nature in its most prolific settings. This tour is for ages 7+ and for all ability levels. The majority of this tour is only accessible by four wheel drive. Short walks can be incorporated into the tour subject to the group’s wishes.
Whistler Blackcomb has developed a comprehensive approach to climate change, supported by all levels of government. Learn first-hand how climate change is changing the mountain environment and what the resort is doing to manage its affects through adaptation, mitigation and diversification. Weather permitting we will visit a glacier, which is nature’s thermometer – the most sensitive ecosystem to temperature change.
Our mountain ecosystems support numerous wildlife including Coastal Mountain black- tailed deer, colonies of marmots and numerous black bears. Ski trails can provide ideal habitat for bears. Generations of black bear families have coexisted and benefited from ski area development. Learn about these bears and how the mountain resort successfully integrates development with the bear’s needs.
Whistler Blackcomb is situated in the coastal mountain range, which in geological terms, is a relatively young range. Through a combination of tectonic plate movement, volcanic activity and glaciation these mountains have developed into some of the most beautiful alpine landscapes in the world. We will explore some of the clues behind the history and formation of the Coastal Range.
Whistler Blackcomb has received over 30 national and international awards for its environmental stewardship. Explore on the ground some of the efforts that the resort has made to build recreational experiences inside ecosystems rather changing them. Learn about the challenges and creative solutions that have evolved in development of recent projects like the Symphony zone. This project was awarded nationally and internationally including recognition from the UN Secretariat of Biodiversity.
Learn how the resort operation is lowering its carbon emissions, including developing renewable energy on the mountain. Visit a renewable energy micro hydro plant that produces what the mountain operation requires to operate annually. Gain insights on how Whistler Blackcomb is striving to be the first large scale tourism operation to have a zero operating footprint. You will receive a candid overview on the successes, failures and challenges in making this happen.
