Winning poster design will celebrate the joining of two legendary mountains
Whistler Blackcomb has announced details of a commemorative PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola poster competition. Artists are invited to submit a design for a commemorative poster to celebrate the upcoming grand opening of the record-setting PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. Like so many now-legendary posters that have marked Whistler milestones and events over the years, the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola commemorative poster will no doubt take its place on the hallowed walls of Whistler ski cabins throughout the resort.
"Revolutionizing the experience forever, the connection of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains at 6,000 feet is an awesome project that will inspire generations of mountain enthusiasts for years to come," says Dave Brownlie, Whistler Blackcomb's President and Chief Executive Officer. "As such, we want to commemorate the occasion with a work of art that will capture the magnitude of the project, the essence of its vision, and the spirit in all of us who will ride it."
The winning artist will be awarded a Whistler Blackcomb 2008/09 season pass, a $500 gift card for Whistler Blackcomb retail outlets, and 100 copies of the poster.
"We hope that the endless possibilities that the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola offers will inspire community artists to create and take part in this historic launch," continues Brownlie. "In many ways, the opening of the Gondola signifies a new birth, a new era in mountain access, and the beginning of a new chapter filled with the hundreds of stories that Whistler and Blackcomb mountains inspire each season. To capture all this in a piece of art is true genius, and I would be very honoured to showcase the winning artwork to all who take part in the launch."
Copies of the poster will be given away to guests attending the PEAK 2 PEAK grand opening event on December 12. The original artwork will be auctioned off at the 2009 TELUS Winter Classic/ Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Gala on January 25th, with proceeds going towards supporting non-profit organizations in the Sea to Sky Corridor. Entries that are not selected for the commemorative poster may still be used in an art exhibit at the Roundhouse Lodge on the weekend of the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola opening.
The artwork created should be an original piece designed specifically for this contest. The theme for the painting should focus on 'Connection'. Artists must submit a photo of their work by October 24 at 5pm. Judging will take place the following week and the winner will be notified on November 5.
