The Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Environmental Fund (WBFEF)

The WBFEF was created in 2001 to provide a means for Whistler Blackcomb staff members to get involved in supporting local environmental projects. The bulk of its funding comes from Whistler Blackcomb staff members who sign up to donate funds from their pay cheques. In turn, these funds are matched by the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation. The Environmental Fund also receives support from the Raynier Foundation in Seattle and holds an annual Telluride Mountainfilm on Tour event in Whistler.

To 2006, the WBFEF has spent $141 783.00 and sponsored 26 projects. Previous projects supported by the grants include fish and wildlife habitat projects, mountain bike trail maintenance and improvement, education and interpretive work, bear management and support for community sustainability planning and programs in Whistler, Squamish and Pemberton.

What we have done to be active partners in moving toward sustainability in our local and global communities:

  • Established the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, which is dedicated to raising funds that support social capital projects for community non- profit organizations. Since 1992, $3.8 million dollars has been raised.
  • Started the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Environmental Fund in 2001 to fund environmental projects in the Sea to Sky corridor. Since 2001, over $200,000 has been raised and 28 projects have been sponored.
  • The WB Habitat Improvement Team (HIT) meets bi-weekly in the summer to complete local restoration projects. To date, we have completed 72 restoration projects.
  • Bring over 400 youth to the resort each summer to participate in outreach programs.
  • First Nations communities participate in numerous capacity building programs with Whistler Blackcomb.
  • International involvement has included working with European and Australian ski industry operators on initiatives such as climate change. Consulting support has been provided to the UNEP for protecting UNESCO world heritage sites in mountainous regions.
  • Sent aid overseas in the form of winter clothing, computers and books. We have sent more than 15,000 articles to Romania and more than 5,000 items to Nepal, Kashmir and the Ukraine. We also provide in-kind consulting services to help communities trying to promote tourism in their areas.
