Composting at the Roundhouse
The Roundhouse Lodge is a 50,000 square foot restaurant at the top of Whistler Mountain. We have been collecting organics from the kitchen of the Roundhouse for three years and composted 100 tonnes of organics in 2006. We have also expanded our composting program to include the collection of paper towels in all of our on-mountain restrooms.
What we have done to reduce our waste:
- Worked to purchase less packaging and materials, reusing as much as possible and recycling and composting.
- Switched to 30% post-consumer recycled content office paper.
- Recycle more than 25 types of materials from beverage containers to light bulbs to ski poles.
- Reduced the waste we sent to the landfill by 59% between 2001 and 2005.
- Recycle more than 80,000 beverage containers per year.
- Reuse materials through our Mountain Materials Exchange. Our staff can send items they no longer use to the Exchange, like ski equipment, desks and office equipment, dishes, furniture and clothing, where they can be picked up by other staff members.
- Compost organics at several restaurants and collected 100 tonnes of organics to be composted into garden materials in 2006.
- Hold an annual Mountain Clean Up day where staff members get outside and pick up litter.
- Clothing, equipment, and office supplies donated to organisations in Sea to Sky Corridor and overseas charities.
- Attend staff training sessions and weekly meetings across all divisions to outline our sustainability programs including ways that staff can reduce, reuse and recycle waste.
