Parks Report
January 31, 2012
The X Games 2012 winter edition is in the can. Love 'em or hate 'em, you can't deny that X gets people talking about our beloved sports and pushes the limits of what was once thought possible on skis, snowboards, snowmobiles and sit skis. Despite the internet lighting up with hater comments about such subjects as perfect scores, judging formats and people's choice in wardrobe, I couldn't help imagining it all taking place right here in Whistler. Being the only city bidding on a winter tour stop, you would think Whistler is a shoe in for a host city. Unfortunately, wanting to host the ESPN carnival is not the same as getting to host it. There are many layers to this onion and we need many people to come to the table to make it a reality. I for one would love to see it on our turf. The legacy of what resources it would bring to our Parks would make it worthwhile to even the most anti-media shreds with more rails, modifications to the HL line and more snow cat time we would all benefit from the spectacle.
At the moment we have over 150 features in our parks with changes and additions happening daily. Highlights this week include, the Cougar line now features a total of 9 jumps in the XS to S range for people to get new tricks on. Chipmunk has had a facelift with rail combos changed up. On Blackcomb, Choker has had a major rail refit including the addition of two brand new boxes from Arena Snowparks. In the Highest Level the Shack got reworked into a perfect 50' step-over. We have also built "JAWS", the massive QP at the bottom of Catskinner. This year it is the biggest it has ever been, measuring 40' from flat bottom to lip and 50' wide.
More changes are in the plan so come check out what we have been up to; you're going to have a good time! BF
