Try on many different brands and models Probably the single most critical piece of equipment is your boots. The dopest board, clothing and accessories won't comfort you one bit when all you can think of is the throbbing foot pain you're experiencing. There are plenty of good boots out there for all budgets, but, remember that not all boots fit all feet. Feet are very personal and unique things, and it may take trying several different companies' offerings before you find the one that works for your particular foot.
Buy a boot with a removable liner Another important thing is to make sure the boots have a removable liner so that you can pull it out at night to dry. There was a time when liner-less boots were all the rage, but for good reason, they are becoming a thing of the past.
Buy a boot with sufficient support Also, be sure that the boot gives you sufficient support. Most do nowadays, but again, try several on till you find one with a comfortable, yet supportive tongue. A stiff tongue, when laced up, will stiffen up the entire boot and help to prevent stress on your Achilles tendon and other ankle injuries.
Get a customized fit (budget allowing) Depending on your budget, you can get a more personalized fit if you look for a "thermo-formable" liner. These liners are made with a type of material (EVA) that when heated, will custom form to your foot. Many of the high-end boots come with these liners, but do make sure that you get an experienced shop-person to do the fitting for you. If you really want to go pro, custom foot beds can also be placed in the boot. These are pretty expensive little items but when done properly, can really do wonders.
And if all that customizing stuff scares you, don't sweat it, as I said, just try on lots of different boots and you're sure to find something that will fit, right out of the box.
