Five benefits of lessons that have absolutely nothing to do with skiing

December 04, 2015   •   Megan Wilson

I get it, you already know how to ski, and you couldn’t possibly get any better, but could there possibly be any other reasons to take a lesson? I’m glad you asked. Stick with me and I’ll show you the wisdom of booking a lesson that will do nothing to your parallel turns.

1. Lift Line Priority

Having an instructor with you gives you magical VIP status. Instead of lining up with the masses, you get to use the Snow School priority lines at the front. Less time waiting equals more laps in the day.

2. A Group of People to Ski With

Skiing with people of different ability levels is notoriously difficult. Either you’re the beginner being taken down runs that are way over your skill level, or you’re the expert that feels bored all day. Ski lessons are grouped by skill level so you’ll be spending the day with people that want to go your pace. Who knows, you might even make new friends.

3. Local knowledge

Not everyone has a local friend that can show them around the hill. I can’t count the number of times I’ve ridden up Emerald chair with people that said that they have been skiing that chair all day. Emerald zone is great and all, but you’re seriously missing out on some fantastic skiing. Ski instructors are out there every day, and are basically walking trail maps. They know all of the best routes and runs so you can get the most of your day.

4. Gear Hookups via Referral

Ski and snowboard instructors are the some of the most hooked up people in town. They rely on having the best gear to do their jobs, but don’t want to spend a ton of money on it. They are not only a wealth of knowledge on where to shop, but they also come equipped with retail referral cards to help you score a deal on your next purchase.

5. Your Own Personal Gear Tech

According to Murphy’s law, your gear will only break when you are in the most inconvenient place on the mountain. Having an instructor with you is like having your own personal MacGyver. They know every trick in the book to make sure your gear is functioning correctly. An instructor may not only save your day, but also your sanity.
