Planning a trip to Whistler? These top travel tips will ensure you get the most out of your visit to one of the world’s best ski resorts.
1. Should we rent a vehicle when travelling to Whistler?
The scenic drive from Vancouver Airport to Whistler takes about two hours. Hotel shuttles and in town buses are available to pedestrian friendly Whistler Village, with most amenities within walking distance. So, a car isn’t essential once you’re here. To arrive, Shuttle buses are a convenient option. However, for larger groups (7+ people), chauffeured transportation may be worth considering, offering more convenience and personal space at a similar cost to the shuttle.
2. If we do get a vehicle, where can we park?
All hotels offer parking for guests, although the majority are pay parking at about $20 - $40 a day with many offering secure underground parking. For those not staying at a hotel, Whistler has day lots between Whistler and Blackcomb for parking near the Pedestrian Village. These lots charge hourly or daily rates, with Lots 1-3 being closer to the Village (and slightly more expensive). Note: overnight parking is not allowed in winter months. RV parking is available in Lot 3.
3. How long should we stay when visiting Whistler Blackcomb?
A typical stay is 5 nights, with a 4-day lift ticket. This gives you enough time to explore the vast terrain and enjoy non-skiing activities. For most skiers, this gives you enough time to familiarize yourself with the village, the runs and some activities. Keep in mind, though, that’s this is a very large resort with two huge mountains and a ton of things to do – we’d hate to see you go before you really had your fill! If you're travelling from Europe or Australia, consider a longer stay of at least a week to fully experience everything Whistler has to offer.
4. What clothing should we pack for a Whistler trip?
Whistler's climate can vary, so layers are key. Dress in waterproof gear, especially for early or late-season visits. The weather at the base can be warmer than at the summit. Bring multiple pairs of socks, gloves, and long underwear, as drying wet gear daily may not be possible.
5. Should we bring our own skiing and snowboarding gear or rent?
Renting is highly recommended, as it saves the hassle and cost of flying with gear. Pre-book rentals to save money and pick them up the night before to avoid morning crowds, or use local ski delivery to your hotel. An additional recommended option is using the gear subscription service My Epic Gear, a service for premium, high-quality rental equipment that you select—often a step up from your own—available for daily pick up and drop off on the mountain for added convenience.
6. What childcare services are available in Whistler?
For children over 4 years old, we highly recommend Snow School daily or weekly lessons, perfect for parents who want to ski solo and have their kids learn fundamentals at the same time.
If your child is too young, would prefer not to ski, for times when lessons are not running or you’re looking for a night out without the kids, Nannies in Whistler will come right to your hotel room. They have 24/7 hours so they are a great option whenever you need someone.
7. What if we need to cancel our trip to Whistler?
Cancellation policies vary across rentals, lessons, and accommodations. Most hotels require final payment 30-60 days prior to arrival. It’s important that you familiarize yourself with what applies in each instance. Travel insurance is recommended in case of unforeseen changes to your plans. Some locations may offer flexible options for alternate stays, but this is subject to the hotel's discretion.
